La Maisonette... Alpine Comfort

La Maisonette has been lovingly restored around an old chapel. High ceilings provide excellent natural light and highlight a stylish blend of contemporary living with many original architectural features.

The cottage is replete with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The master bedroom offers the possibility of a twin or double bed. We can also add a cot if requested. This room offers direct access to the garden and woodland beyond. The second double is characterized by its exposed timbers, stone and mezzanine. The fully furnished kitchen blends stylish and spacious living with many rustic touches. It is well equipped and perfect for family dining.

The open plan design incorporates a living room complete with double sofa bed and large mezzanine. The main bathroom is chic, complete with a roomy walk-in power-shower, bidet and all the essentials. The larger, external bathroom is equipped with a toilet, sink and washing machine doubling as a safe place to store sports equipment.

Whilst the back garden looks out over woodland, the front terrace offers a covered seating area with views over the hamlet and formidable precipices beyond. Perhaps the quirkiest feature is the statue of the "Black Madonna of Oropa", upon which La Maisonette is built around. Here, an ancient mule trail passes, winding first through forests and eventually to the mountains beyond.

The Activities Around Us

Pardon our bias but Fontainemore really is an undiscovered gem. Visitors here can escape the hoards and enjoy a genuine Valdostanan experience. The village and its satellite hamlets offer a rustic charm of a bygone era; the surrounding mountains are some of the wildest and least frequented in the Italian Alps.

Turin Caselle and Milan Malpensa are the most convenient airports. Other viable options include Milan Linate and Orio al Serio (Bergamo). All four are located between 1-2 hours drive from La Maisonette. The Milan airports offer regular shuttles (€ 5-10) to Central Station from where onward train connections can be sought.

From Turin Caselle, Sadem bus company runs a thrice hourly service to Porta Susa (45 mins, € 6.50) From where onward connections are necessary. We would recommend that independent travellers continue by train rather than bus.

Your main goal is to arrive at Pont-Saint-Martin (Valle d’Aosta) from where you will take the SR44 up the Gressoney Valley.

From France or Switzerland, join the Torino-bound A5 via the respective San Bernado/Mt Blanc tunnels or passes. Please be aware that the higher, non toll options are seasonal (feel free to contact us for the latest info). Exit the A5 at Pont-Saint-Martin.

From Milan (145km), take the Torino-bound A4 for 72km until Santhià. Here, stay right and take the E25 that connects with the A5 near Ivrea. Turn right and follow the A5 towards Aosta. Exit at Pont-Saint-Martin.

From Turin/Torino (75km), take the Aosta-bound A5 to Pont-Saint-Martin.

The previous instructions are given for those arriving by autostrada (Motorway). Remember that in Italy these are tolled roads. It is possible, cheaper and very picturesque to follow the "State/Regional roads" – "Strade Statali/Regionali (SS/SR)", but expect significantly longer journey times.
From the toll exit booths at Pont-Saint-Martin, turn right. At the first roundabout take the 2nd exit and at the second roundabout take the 3rd exit. After a few hundred meters turn right onto the SR44 bound for Gressoney. After 9km, opposite a picnic area and shortly before entering the village of Fontainemore, take the signed switchback right to the hamlet of Espaz (if you reach the bridge over the Lys then you have gone too far!). 300 metres after taking the Espaz turning, you will enter into a parking area. Give us a ring and we will come down and meet you.

From Turin Caselle Airport the  nearest rail station is Porta Susa. Sadem's bus service connects the two 3 times an hour. From Porta Susa take the train to Ivrea (that originates from Porta Nuova) where you will need to change and take the Aosta-bound service. Disembark at Pont-Saint-Martin and take a 25-minute bus ride to Fontainemore (Gressoney service) where we will meet you.

From Milan Central Station, take the Torino-bound service and get down at Chivasso. Change lines (usually to platform 4) and take the train to Ivrea. Change here and take the Aosta-bound service. Get down at Pont-Saint-Martin. Total journey time should be approx 2.30hrs; total cost between 14-40 euros depending on the respective service. The "Freccia Rossa/Bianca" is the faster but more expensive option. Tickets are available online at Trenitalia. We should also be able to collect you from Pont-Saint-Martin if onward bus times are unfavourable.

Whilst the Valle d’Aosta has excellent bus connections, arriving from the airports is not so straight forward. For those who like a challenge, there are 4 daily services that depart from near Milan Lampugnana metro station. Once there it will cost around € 15 and take 1hr 40 minutes to Pont-Saint-Martin.

From Turin, there is an irregular service from Torino Porta Susa to Pont-Saint-Martin (65 minutes).

From Pont-Saint-Martin to La Maisonette  it should take an additional 25 minutes and cost less than 2 euros. The line is well served by the V.I.T.A. bus company. Check on-line the "Linea Pont-Saint-Martin - Gressoney".

We can arrange discounted taxis for up to 8 people with equipment. This may prove to be much faster, more comfortable and perhaps even a cheaper option, especially for a larger group. We can drop off or collect you from all airports or any other given destination. Please contact us for up-to-date prices.
